 The Adelaide Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav (Public Festival of Lord Ganesh), which was started in 2012 by Marathi-speaking devotees of Lord Ganesh, has become a valuable part of Adelaide’s cultural scene. Thanks to the tireless efforts of organisers, good management skills and its colourful cultural programs, the festival today attracts hundreds of devotees.

Apart from its social and religious aspect and that of providing a platform for members of Indian community to showcase its artistic talents, the Adelaide Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav has also fostered friendships between members of Marathi community and those of other Indian communities.

As a strong believer in Multiculturalism, I recognised the importance of this festival in bringing people closer and creating a bond. I wholeheartedly supported the idea of the Ganeshotsav and provided help when approached with the proposal to hold this festival in 2012. Therefore, Kalindi and I gave the image of the Lord for worship and helped to secure the Windsor Gardens Community Hall for the first Ganeshotsav in 2012.

I would like to suggest that the Committee should consider setting aside time to hold talks on aspects of Hindu religion.

My compliments to the Adelaide Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samiti for their outstanding work in successfully conducting the celebration. I wish the Samiti continued success in the service of community and Lord Ganesh.

 Dear Mr Gaonkar,

Thank you for asking me to write something regarding ASGS and Adelaide Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav. I am very pleased to write my impressions of this yearly event. My sentiments are as under.

Adelaide Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samitee (ASGS) will be celebrating Adelaide's the sixth sarvajanik Ganesh festival this year.

Our family has attended all the earlier ones and we are looking forward to this year's event. While we celebrate the Ganesh festival at our Hindu temple each year, the festival arranged by ASGS provides a platform where cultural programs are presented for everybody's enjoyment. The festival is getting bigger and better every year. Planning for the event starts several months earlier. It is a credit to the organisers that they have galvanised the community and have encouraged participation of young and old. The cultural programs have been superb every year. We are all aware that the organisers and volunteers put in lot of efforts and give their valuable time for this. I am particularly impressed by the fact that donations are given to the charities. Altogether I fully commend the people involved for undertaking this mammoth task and offer my full support.

We should not lose sight of the fact that the Ganesh festival is a religious event and while we all enjoy the cultural side of the festival perhaps more needs to be done to encourage our community to learn about our religion and culture. Perhaps Atharva shirsha can be taught to young children and those who do not know the meaning of the stotra can take the opportunity to learn it.

As a separate matter, Lord Ganesh has incarnations in each of the three Yugas. The incarnation this Kali Yuga is to take place. I am wondering if the earlier Avatars can be presented on stage. If this is feasible I can provide details of the forms of Lord Ganesha in each Yuga.

 ॲडलेड मधील गणेशोत्सवाची एक वेगळी अनोखी पद्धत परवा ऐकिवात आली. साल २०१२ पर्यंत गणेश चतुर्थीच्या दिवशी गणपती मंदिरात गणेशपूजन हवन आरती सर्व काही होत असे. एक दिवसाच्या या सोहोळ्यात पूजा, हवन यांचा सहभाग असला तरी सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमांचा त्यामधे समावेश नसे. याची दोन प्रमुख कारणे होती जागा आणि वेळ. मंदिराची जागा सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम करण्याच्या दृष्टीने पुरेशी नाही आणि अनेक मंडळीना या कार्यक्रमासाठी शनिवार रविवार सोयीचा. त्यामुळेच काहीतरी अपूर्ण राहतंय अशी चुटपूट अनेक मराठी माणसांना लागत असे. यासाठी काहीतरी केलेच पाहिजे असे काही मंडळींनी मनावर घेतले आणि या मधूनच जन्म झाला ॲडलेड सार्वजनिक गणेशोत्सव समितीचा. २०१२ साली साधारण १५० मंडळींच्या उपस्थितीत हा दोन दिवसांचा सोहोळा साजरा होऊ लागला व मराठी अमराठी भारतीय मंडळी, काही परदेशी मंडळीही अत्यंत उत्साहाने यात सहभागी होऊ लागली. या दोन दिवसांच्या सोहोळ्यात गणेशाचे पुन्हा एकदा आगमन होते, पूजा होते, स्थापना होते, उत्तर पूजाही होते. मंदिरातल्या प्रमाणेच मूर्ती विसर्जित मात्र होत नाही. हा कार्यक्रम सुरु केल्यामुळे स्टेजवर जाऊन आपल्यातले कलागुण दाखवण्याची संधी ॲडलेडकरांना मिळू लागली. लहान थोर सारेच यात सहभागी झाले. मंडळी यासाठी देणग्या देणे, देणग्या मिळवणे, वस्तू रूपाने मदत करणे, कष्टाने मदत करणे अश्या विविध रुपात मदत करू लागली. या वर्षी देखील काल आणि परवा म्हणजेच २६ व २७ सप्टेंबर रोजी इथल्या भारतीय मंडळींनी अत्यंत सुरेख क्षणांचा अनुभव घेतला. गणपतीच्या पालखीची ढोल ताश्यांच्या गजरात मिरवणूक, नृत्य गायनाच्या कार्यक्रमांची रेलचेल, अथर्वशिर्षाची आवर्तनं, दणक्यात महाआरती, महाप्रसाद याचा आनंद सर्व मंडळी मनापासून घेत होती. अत्यंत नियोजनबद्ध असा हा कार्यक्रम अगदी दृष्ट लागावी असा होता. सगळीकडे मनोहारी रंगांची जणू उधळण होती. पुणेरी पगड्या घातलेले पुरुष, नऊवारी साड्या नेसून ठसक्यात वावरणाऱ्या बायका. परकर पोलक्यातल्या मुली पाहून आपण परदेशात नसून कदाचित कोकणात किंवा पुण्यात आहोत कि काय असा संभ्रम अनेकांना पडला असावा. मराठमोळ्या लावण्या, महाराजांच्या राज्याभिषेकाचे दृश्य, व्हॉयलीन वादन, कविता वाचन, शास्त्रीय नृत्य, लोकनृत्य अश्या भरगच्च कार्यक्रमांची रेलचेल होती. सुमारे ७०० लोकांच्या जेवणासाठी व महाप्रसादाच्या वाटपाची व्यवस्था इतकी चोख होती कि सर्व मंडळीना पुरी, भाजी, मसालेभात व लाडू हा प्रसाद १५-२० मिनिटात वाटण्यात आला. कुठेही गडबड नाही, गोंधळ नाही अव्यवस्था नाही, सर्व काही शांतपणे वेळेनुसार सर्व काही पार पडत होते. सर्व मंडळींचा उत्साह पाहून राहून राहून मनात येत होते कि मनुष्य प्राण्याला जे सहज उपलब्ध असतं त्याची किंमत नसते अप्राप्य असतं ते मिळवण्यासाठी तो कितीही अधिक कष्ट घ्यायला तयार असतो. अश्या या मराठी संस्कृती जपण्याच्या प्रयत्नात असणाऱ्या मराठी माणसाला बाप्पाचा आशीर्वाद सदैव लाभो ही गणेशाच्या चरणी मनपुर्वक प्रार्थना.
